Prospective interns are usually asked to come in for an interview.
Please budget one hour of your time. The interview itself will take
about fifteen minutes, and you will also be asked to complete a
couple of editing exercises to give us an idea of your baseline.

Our interns come in one day a week, 10.00am – 4.00pm, and are given real responsibilities that teach them all about proofreading, editing, writing, layout, design, and marketing – all the facets of book production. On top of that, there are also responsibilities in research, administration, and making tea.

A Busybird internship runs anywhere from 4 – 6 months, with a four-week probationary period.

A probationary period? you ask.

Be warned: the publishing world isn’t always glamorous. There’s lots of reading. LOTS. And lots! It can be exhausting. Burnout or disenfranchisement is common. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. So the probationary period exists to ensure this is something you want to do and that you are a good fit for Busybird.

However, once you’ve gone through our internship program and gained real CV-worthy experience, Busybird does offer subcontracting paid work as an editor, proofreader, and manuscript assessor.

Only the most diligent need apply. We expect this opportunity to be treated like a regular job.

  • Learning FIND & REPLACE editing on Word

  • Register book with State Library
  • CIP Registration
  • Uploading POD to Ingram Spark
  • Image conversion (to 300 DPI)

We require interns to be on-site, and that at this time, we do not facilitate remote internships.

If you have applied previously, you can apply again. Sometimes, prospective interns simply
miss out because we have limited slots to offer, and selection has come down to availability,
e.g. two prospective interns are great fits, but they are each only available for the same day,
which means that one will unfortunately miss out.
